Le “front-tiers” pyrénéen
Les voies du renseignement
durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale

par Thomas Ferrer

Abstract. The Pyrenean border is not a place partic-
ularly mentioned in the history of the Second World
War, contrary to the landing beaches, the Russian
front, or the Pacific islands. However, a further study
allows to find that this linear range is at the heart of
complex supremacy stakes throughout the war but also is one of the privileged
action grounds for the secret services, as much the Allied’s (SOE, BCRA, OSS)
as their enemies’ (Abwehr). Information, money, arms cross a mountain naturally
dangerous and what is more narrowly watched, especially from the end of 1942.
In this context, people smugglers, French or Spanish, mainly recruited among the
locals, have a crucial and dangerous role which most of them play bravely, per-
sistently and with some efficiency.
